Vietnam and the US signed a deal Tuesday to extend the Bilateral Air Transport Agreement which expired last year.

The five-year agreement, which came into effect in March 2004, has been extended until March 31, 2012.

Its regulations on passenger transport remain unchanged, with each country allowed to operate three airlines in the other.

Currently, United Airlines is the only US carrier to operate daily flights between the two countries while Vietnam Airlines has yet to fly to the US.

Logistics services company FedEx also operates flights between the two countries.
